Up until the 60's all of the people in the world, everywhere, and for all of history, HAD to live their lives exactly as their culture and family told them to e.g. a Muslim girl in Somalia had to live exactly as she was told, but so did everyone else on earth, more or less. If you were Hindu you married a Hindu and lived as a Hindu did, same with every other culture and religion on earth. Mormon, Catholic, Babtist and on and on. Why don't the early day Christians in Rome fit that mold. What about the Protestant Reformation? I can think of other examples but seems that these folks challenged the staus quo ig time and suffered dire consequences (death) as a result...
