Both sides have vested interests in the system that they don't attacked. If one of their fundamental beliefs is attacked (often related to their pocketbook) they will always defend it or deflect criticism of it.

The problem for the rest of us is that behavior is this just delaying the full and frank discussion the country probably will be compelled to have as it runs out of enough money to support all of the programs in which people have a vested interest.
