"No Contract" Phones ...

<< In the previous message to Syl you wrote: "No contract Lumia 520s are not selling anywhere at $79 to $99" and in the next message you post: "The 520 can be bought for $99 as a pre-paid phone." ? >>

What Tero stated in his Forbes article that I posted is more correct than what I stated. My own prior post (to be more precise) should have stated "Unsubsidized, carrier unlocked, no postpaid contract Lumia 520s are not selling anywhere at $79 to $99."

The Lumia 520 is tied to AT&T's GoPhone plan and SIM. AT&T customers can prepay for the phone without a long-term commitment. Buyers can then choose from among four monthly pre-play plans.

The Lumia 520 at T-Mo USA is tied to their pay as you go plans. Requires a T-Mo SIM to activate it for cellular use and a prepaid package to use it.

In addition to a postpaid LG feature phone acquired originally with an annual contract my wife and I have "no contract" Verizon prepay Samsung Gusto's in the console of each of our cars. Each phone cost us $20 -- less than what Verizon paid and the balance becomes part of their COA. Activation free with a use it or lose it prepaid amount. We pay $100 per annum for each prepay account tied to the EMI (and phone number). On any day we use the phone $1.95 is deducted from our prepaid account and we can place and received as many calls as we wish. Essentially we became 2 contract Verizon customer/subscribers (3 with our postpaid phone) once we activated and paid a prepay anount.

I used the term "no contract" because "no annual contract" doesn't really apply outside the US for prepaid plans which can be for shorter duration (but reduced operator subsidy).

What an operator or operator sells a device for does not reflect Nokia's wholesale ASP and low ASP devices do not necessarily reflect lower per unit gross margin than a higher priced device.
