Dell's Optiplex Systems Among First to Deliver Advanced Management Technologies Across Entire Business PC Family; OptiPlex Line Completes Phase II of Dell's Managed PC Initiative

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1997--Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems company, today enhanced the systems management capabilities for its award-winning OptiPlex(R) family of PCs and thus has completed Phase II of the company's Managed PC initiative. Dell is among the first companies in the industry to incorporate advanced management technologies across an entire family of business PCs. The enhanced management capabilities, incorporated on the OptiPlex GXa and Gn systems, are designed to help Dell's large business and institutional customers manage and control their systems on networks, and, when properly implemented, can lower their total cost of ownership.

Unveiled in May, the three-phased Managed PC program delivers leading industry-standard management technologies across the company's full line of corporate desktops, notebook PCs and workstation systems.

Phase II of the Managed PC initiative includes support for the Intel(R) Wired for Management (WfM) baseline specification, which includes industry-standard Wake-Up on LAN, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) support, remote system boot and configuration capabilities, remote FLASH and BIOS installation, as well as administrator password capability and remote configuration of system drives, ports and buses. Dell's Managed PCs attained Phase I status in July, including Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0 and Microsoft's Zero Administration Kit (ZAK) and Zero Administration Windows (ZAW) operating systems support.

The OptiPlex GXa and Gn desktops incorporate the same industry- standard management technologies offered in the OptiPlex N and NX systems, Dell's first PCs that comply with the Dell co-authored Network PC (Net PC) System Guidelines specification, which were launched last month. As Managed PCs, the OptiPlex PC family can be managed and controlled through the Dell PowerEdge(R) configuration management server, which incorporates Intel's LANDesk Configuration Manager software, or other industry standard configuration management tools such as Computer Associates' Enterprise/CSi.

The OptiPlex GXa incorporates the Intel Pentium(R) II processor with speeds ranging from 233--300MHz, while the OptiPlex Gn features the Intel Pentium processor with MMX(TM) technology with speeds from 166--233MHz. Both can be configured with Intel's EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100+ management adapter with industry-standard Wake-up On LAN technology. This technology, coupled with the OptiPlex systems, enables system administrators to remotely power up, boot and manage networked PCs, allowing off-hours maintenance from one central location, which, when properly implemented, can help large business customers lower their overall support costs.

The primary market for hi-end computers is companies, not
their employees.

Sure, if component prices fall faster than DELL's wage factor,
it might mean increased profits. But if other companies can't
buy DELL's computers because of their wage factors...
