The most important contribution of a CEO is putting executives and Managers in place who are focused on a culture of constant improvement and problem solving. Of identifying and rewarding positive contributors at all levels, those who create strategic competitive superiority and long term ROI.

Unfortunately, the alpha is often content to read the teleprompters at the annual meeting; and surround themselves with beta folks who tell them what they want to hear. And that includes the board. They are going to win personally, regardless of company performance direction they leave behind. They need a Dan Loeb on the BOD.

The Ballmer type CEOs are more like Mayors of failing Cities, than dynamic leaders. Kicking the can, over-and-over; relying on accountants and lawyers. Microsoft, like any company in this space, needs a man or woman with imagination, good judgement and fearlessness to change that culture and LEAD in the creation of value for us consumers.

JMHO, easy to write this critique, not too easy to implement.
