I dont like it either, but in 1988 the world stood by while Saddam gassed 50000 Kurds. We need not make a choice if the choices in Syria are bad (empowering jihadists vs doing nothing with Assad). Unintended consequences - closing the door on Iran (Assad ally). Risking retaliation eg Hizbollah raining missiles on our fleet; a Syria/Hizbollah/Iran terrorist attack (aided by Russian intelligence) on US soil.

In Libya, we turned a no-fly mandate to protect civilians into a no-drive mission to change regimes. The Russians were mightily pissed, and became distrustful.

One again, we are starting from a point of regime change, not protecting civilian life forms. We'll get no cooperation from Russia, who made it clear early on that they will send missiles to Syria.

Game over.

It's time to change the Great National Television set from Tales of Revolting Peasants to ESPN.

It's OK to root for the Heart Eaters over the Gassers, but don't go running onto the field. Bear in mind that next year, we'll be reading about how the Heart Eater champs killed our ambassador at the embassy in Aleppo with weapons we gave them.
