Trees don't produce methane. Bacteria eating the tree produce the methane.

The trees that produced methane were between 80 and 100 years old, and had a common fungal disease known as heart rot.

Trees aren't producing the methane vin the soil, either. that's done by microbes.

trees can act like chimneys, moving methane gas produced by soil microbes up through roots,

This
"Rice says that the work does not rule out the possibility that plants themselves can produce methane aerobically"

means "so far, we have no proof trees actually make methane".

Now, I have to go plant a red maple.

Don't let it develop heart rot. Have you thought about sugar maples? I've planted a few.
