Boris,
Re -- From what I've heard Firewire is much more expensive thah USB. How much would it add to the price of a typical computer?

USB controllers on the PC are included as part of the chipset and its cost is 0.

My guess on vanila USB controllers for peripherals are in the order of 50c- $1 (this is typical of commodity controllers). However I suspect peripheral vendors will charge anywhere from $2-$50 for this functionality (based on the complexity of the embedded design and the degree of support).

Firewire is not yet commoditized. Based on its usage, I suspect that as an embedded controller it will become cheap with high volumes. As a replacement of "SCSI" controller, it will cost the same as any of the high end SCSI cards.
