But realize that this sort of thing is much more widespread than you'd think. My best friend is Middle Eastern and his wife is Ethiopian. They've gotten refused service/frozen out at places all over the country.
I don't know how your friend feels about dogs, but if he got one and walked it around the park, he'll see people's prejudices about him evaporate.

Just a thought.

I don't believe this story of Z's. But thinking about it, he's probably basing on experience in Italian neighborhoods in NYC and assuming the rest of America is just as bad:
