What I meant by direction of the country is that the middle class is shrinking and more people are applying for benefits (disability, food stamps, medicaid) then are entering the upper middle class and beyond. We are heading toward better off (around 30%) and less better off (around 70%)--which is not a good trend.

Your rhetorical questions are good ones--and ones which our economists and politicians should be attempting to address.
