Actually, after a year or two of war, many of the ones left at home weren't throwing flowers at the soldiers, they were throwing stones and screaming at their government due to lack of food, clothing and other basics as well as their worthless currency, ravaged by inflation that made it impossible to trade with anyone outside of the confederacy. There were bread riots in many confederate cities in 1863 and '64, this wiki article on them barely touches what happened back then:

The Richmond Bread Riot was only the best known of them.

Their govt was a mess, and if their descendents the Teabaggers ever do get in charge of this country, we will become an even bigger mess than we already are.
