Abandon or discard POTS infrastucture or mainly the copper in the ground. I actually think you will see in fairly rapid order a Hybird system before too long being deployed.

In other words, I think the move is to break down neighborhoods to say levels of 200 households from a box that is fed fiber and then distributed via twisted pair. This will allow higher speed by drastically increasing the last mile capabilities for data. Much the same that cable is doing.

They only hurdle is the "life threating" legacy. Because the present system provides the power down the line form the central office, how do ensure that legacy in the future?

I forget which mag I read this recently, but fiber isn't the end all system that some think it is. Seems that there is a temperature phenomeon that affestx fiber over time that is degarding its capability.
