Because it makes the rest of us poorer. For the most part burger flippers don't have an education, they didn't plan ahead, or are working to make ends meet for school or such. To mandate wages to be higher by government or others just means we have to pay more to eat out. So we will eat out less and the economy will suffer. Which by the way is what happened in Australia. McDonold's probably does better in that environment because they have a more efficient system so their cost and prices are probably better than their competitiors.

Check out the Austrialian economic growth rate since they raised their minimum wage.
