It is investment, and the innovation and products that come with it, that gives people something to spend money on. If all we had to spend money on was a core set of products that consisted of essentials, the economy would be stagnant with no growth at all.

This is also why it is stupid to think that giving people taxpayer dollars will somehow create economic growth, or that giving them government jobs will do the same. You're not creating anything; you're just moving money around within the economy.

It is PRODUCTIVITY that creates economic growth, not consumption.
