I hope the Syrians can help themselves. Syrians should not be about American interests any more than we should be about Syrian interests. I don't want the Syrians trying to evaluate American needs and intervene on the basis of their beliefs in our business, and I don't want us doing that to them. I do not think countries can be altruistic, so it's just silly to talk about "narcissism" in terms of countries. Countries are bands of people who band together with a common purpose, and are highly invested in that purpose. To expect them not to be narcissistic is silly, and juvenile. It's like expecting Santa to be just around the corner. Better to hope that countries mind their own business- because that, I think, is probably safer and more attainable.
