After I got in to a very selective grad school, the admissions director admitted at a party that they had no interest in the GRE exam scores. He laughed and said it was good experience for us to take them. But they were looking at grades and other experiences to judge applicants.

As I recall, our admissions folk told us that high school GPA scores were better predictor of college performance than SAT scores. Enough so that they entertained the notion of no longer paying attention to SAT scores. Don't recall what they did about it.
