It really gets pricey if a school is "carrying" an 80-90 player football team. However, with the TV revenue coming into the major conferences it may be a break even proposition. Football and Basketball support all the rest of the college sports--and there are ton of them. The real question is whether this is a good thing or not for the college in educational terms. All the courting of Alumni, the building of ever bigger athletic facilities, the dumb courses for jocks, and the statement all this makes about what our values are--or should be.
