TCI -2: Sees Holding Down Rate Hikes In '98 By Shawn Young NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Tele-Communications Inc. (TCOMA) will announce alliances with three regional cable companies Tuesday evening, Leo J. Hindery Jr., president and chief executive of TCI Ventures Group, said Tuesday morning. The company also expects to announce a personnel change and a programming initiative, he told a media conference sponsored by PaineWebber Inc. here. He declined to give details about the pending announcements. Hindery said the cable deals are in keeping with the company's goal of clustering its operations: "Ubiquity and market concentration was imperative to our success. This is the night we finish the cable side." He forecast that 1998 would be the "year of delivery and the year of alliances." Hindery described 1997 as "the year of the fix." TCI has improved subscriber growth and financial performance, he said. The Denver cable giant will add more than 90,000 customers in the fourth quarter, he said, compared to earlier forecasts of 60,000 to 75,000. And many of the new subscribers are actually returning customers, he added. Hindery said TCI expects its rate increases in 1998 to be at the low end for the industry because it has succeeded in cutting costs, clustering its markets and expanding services. "We do not need to be on the high end, we don't even need to be in the middle on rate increases," Hindery said. TCI's cash flow growth from conventional cable operations should be in the low double digits, he said. However, the company expects strong growth in revenue from digital services and pay-per-view, where demand is explosive. The company is continuing to focus on boosting free cash flow, having reported $849 million in free cash flow as of Sept. 30. "We are passionately committed to continued disciplined focus," he said. TCI, he said, is hard at work on alliances to provide digital set-top boxes for customers. "I want these things right bloody now," he said. Hindery also said TCI expects eventually to venture into Internet telephone service with the help of a partner. "I do not expect to exploit Internet telephony alone," he said. Smiling, Hindery declined to say if the company is in talks with AT&T Corp. (T), which may be poised to expand its involvement with cable. He hastened to add, however, that the company is happy with its data partnership with At Home Corp. (ATHM). "Dow Jones News Service" "Copyright(c) 1997, Dow Jones & Company, Inc."Dave, I see they are talking about Internet Telephony. This could also be a lead in for Antec and the developments they have made with Nortel. Do you follow options much? Seems like there is quite a lot of open interest on calls, especially in the 15's for Feb and May. The Feb 17.5 calls also look interesting at 3/8's. Regards, Mark
