We're in the middle of peace with a Peace Prize president. Of course the US military is being shut down. Why shouldn't it be?

if coal companies were allowed to compete on an even playing field, i.e. EPA and other regulations, they would remain competitive with natural gas.

We need coal AND natural gas AND nukes AND hydro AND whatever other form of fuel we can use to generate power.

The energy needs of this country are not being reduced. Even if technology makes energy use more efficient, we are using more and more devices that require power (those electric cars have to get it from somewhere, eh?). And then we have the simple increase of energy requirements from an ever increasing population.

coal may go down as a percentage of the energy pie, but the actual quantities used will not and cannot be reduced unless we dramatically increase alternate baseload sources.
