The Left is going to have to come to terms with how to restructure entitlement spending to put it on stable ground, and the Right is going to have to come to terms with some change in tax policy to meet projected budget deficits. Republicans are correct to suggest spending is a problem, because it is, but that is only part of the equation--tax reform and entitlement restructuring are the other parts.

Up until Reagan took power, national deficits and the debt were in decline even as welfare, SS and medicare were active programs. Its after Reagan cut taxes that the national debt and budget deficits began to grow. Coincidence? I don't think so.
