I agree completely that employment is a very significant issue, and its likely a root issue of single families as well, as I alluded to in a post the other day. The link between emotional well being and jobs is pretty strong, and for many poor people, the lack of status caused by unemployment is very much a contributing factor to absent men in families.

But this is not addressed at all by the current welfare system. The current welfare system is happy to leave people on the dole. BTW, many of the "single" family households on welfare in fact have single males hanging around. They aren't there legally, buts its a direct consequence of providing shelter and housing to single moms: Plenty of men know very well how to work that angle. But the single moms, section 8 landlords, and social workers have absolutely no incentive to peep about what they know. Its this latter fact that annoys me. The entire system is rotten for obvious reasons: Lack of any method or desire to prune out rot.
