Here comes Santa Claus -- red suit, black eye...

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Santa Claus was nursing a painful black eye on Monday after being pelted with water bombs during a Christmas parade in New Zealand.

Pharmacist Brian Brewerton reluctantly agreed to be Santa for the Saturday parade down the main street of the small northern
town of Kaikohe, saying he knew the occupational hazards, the New Zealand Press Association reported.

He was riding atop a fire engine when suddenly water bombs were being hurled in his direction.

At first he didn't mind, welcoming the cool water on his hot Santa suit.

But then a water bomb caught him in the eye.

"I was leaning to the bag to pick up some lollies (candies) when whammo -- I was caught from right field," Brewerton, 62, said. "I
couldn't see. It was wildly painful and both my eyes were streaming."

For the rest of the parade Brewerton was unable to deliver any Christmas cheer or "ho, ho, ho." He said he was left "pretty shaken" and vowed he would never be a Santa again.

It is not the first time Santa has had a hard time in Kaikohe.

The town gained international attention in 1991 after it was reported Santa was kicked in the shins by children shouting "mean old
bastard" when he ran out of candies to distribute.
