RE:I hypothesized that maybe Assad was desperate enough to do this, that the rebels were actually making significant gains.

That is contrary to almost all the news coming out at the time. Assad's forces were supposedly kicking ass at the time of the gas attack. But who really knows...

Both sides have used gas....the question is why it an urgent matter now?

Have you noticed how all the burgeoning Odumbo Admin scandals have fallen out of the news cycle.....???

Since the rebels already used sarin (a UN investigation team determined that), Assad would have a motive to use it back against them to deter their future re-use of sarin.

Why did Hitler not use gas against the Allies? Cause he didn't want it used on his troops. Same principle works with Assad and the rebels.

The war in Syria has been a stalemate for a long time. When Hezbollah entered the fray Assad made a little headway but soon got bogged down again. Since then it has been one step forward and one step back. The rebels have been getting close to Damascus, so the gas was an attempt to warn them off.
