Re Roger Sippl's letter to the world.

I know it is easy to be cynical (if there were a PhD in the topic, I'd be a shoo-in), but there seems to be an air of "methinks he doth protest too much" about this piece. Consider the four "articles of faith" he puts forward:

>We will maintain all of our current VisiBroker-related development, support and consulting resources

>All current VisiBroker-related development projects will continue.

>VisiBroker will continue to be sold and licensed as a standalone product line to partners and customers interested in licensing CORBA technology.

>Both companies believe in direct sales, support, and consulting.

I don't doubt the sincerity of the first two - by all accounts Mr Sippl is the developer's developer, a hands-on, dedicated, first-in last-out kind of guy.

My doubts creep in around item three - a bit of wishful thinking, in my opinion - but item four is the real eyebrow-raiser. Neither company has a history of direct sales. Borland has always been channel-centric, while Visigenic built its business on OEM licenses. Borland has yet to transition to a direct model (and they won't get there simply by talking about it), while Visigenic had only a few months' experience in the front line, and to all appearances didn't make much headway against the market leader.....

Still a way to go on this one, I feel. Quarter's results will play a big part too... both sets of numbers.

Here's another interesting article. Looks like Oracle and Borland are sort of competing with JBuilder/Borland and JBuilder/Oracle. I wonder what Borland is getting out of it??
