You're right! The politicians might do something like that because they seem to be "blessed" with that rather unusual combination of cleverness and shamelessness :-)

Since my IRA contributions are anyway non-deductible, it doesn't harm me to go for the Roth IRA for as long as I'm eligible for it. But I would think a dozen times before rolling over my regular IRA into a Roth IRA, and even then, I would probably decide against it.

Dipy.

Dogman:
RE "what if there is a national sales tax? No more income tax !"
A national sales tax would be an unmitigated disaster. You earn and save mostly after-income-tax money most of your working life. Then comes the national sales tax. Congratulations. Now you get to pay sales tax when you spend your already taxed earnings. Not very fair to those who've saved all there life for a comfortable retirement. Hopefully, GREY POWER will stop this bad idea in its tracks.

RE: "what if there is a national sales tax?No more income tax ! this could be our politicians ace in the hole, collect all the conversion tax on ira's then change to a new tax system."

Very interesting point! Upon first thought, it seems possible.

Best wishes,
