What great mysteries did we miss needing to read the entire City of God to find out that merry old Augustine himself proves the evolution of cultural ideas was syncretic? He's was an inspired Platonist, not very original but kudos for the plagiarism & keeping Plato's ideas preserved. These ideas passed down and in him we see the dualist theology of the gnostics that traces back to the Persian Zoroastrians. In fact Mani who started that widespread religion Augustine followed fervently was Iranian and his teachings spread wide & far over the empire, even over to China. This easily proving only all have been saying about the manifold influences, yet someone's a little too dense to grasp ( dum dum that you are) Augustine decided its a fallen world, original sin , the trinity, baptism & other such mental profundities that amount to nothing more than philosophical ejaculations, meaningless except after a spoiled riot of youthful excess of drunkeness and bedding girls and lots of fleshly lusting around, he saw the light & later as he gets older he moderates to become a saint? ( which happens naturally to all of us, dum dum) The beauty of all this nonsense is its distinctive evolutionary quality, the way he gets older & wiser (duh) and what ideas that survive are those that remained unpersecuted, not actively violated and its pious well meaning authors not sought out & exterminated. Just like nature, raw & deliberately violent extinctions, burn to the ground what is not yours, hide the bodies, destroy the books. Great way to prove the "rightness" of your beliefs, & it worked just like evolution & survival of the fittest would predict.
