Betty,

If you don't pay out the full cost of the shares you're shorting, you pay margin interest from the time you sell. I don't know if you pay more interest if the stock goes up, but maybe so!

Probably they are paying margin interest on all those shares at the 4.5 price, which does lower their 30% profit.
