Taht's why you want to keep on top of it. If you have the Plus Pack, you can set the System Agent to do it automatically. If you don't do it and run into situations where the hard drive incurs these errors silently, they just compound till one or the other file that you actually use frequently gets crosslinked, or your FAT (File Allocation Table) gets screwed up. By taht time, it can be too late; too many files are involved and you may need to reformat and reinstall the works. So, perhaps best not to start in on it if the computer being down would hurt you the next day.

If you've gotten a lot of disk errors from having to cold boot the system, then you may have a buildup of .TMP files as well. After running Scandisk, take a look at your \Windows\Temp directory to see if you've got a wad of .TMP files from days gone past. Go ahead and knock them out if you do. This can have an impact on overall performance and printing as well.
