Putin gets to keep control over the conflict, which has been moving in favor or Russia's interests.

Putin doesn't want to stare Obama down over Syria, right before his Olympics, so he told Syria to accept Kerry's blurted "solution". It's a win-win, Dave, and Obama, who had misjudged America's tolerance for foreign adventures following Iraq, saw it immediately and seized it. To bad for your team - you actually thought Putin was on YOUR side!

Putin wants an end to this without the US launching an attack, having to bail on Syria or Syria to keep on using chemical weapons. They can only cover for them so far before they will have to cave.

And now Putin has a way out. It is going to take a lot more effort than I am sure he wants to expend. But it is better than what he was facing.
