NEWS:CLARiiON,Emulex,Bull team on disaster recovery

Business/Technology Editors

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1997--CLARiiON, the world's
leading provider of open RAID-based storage solutions and Data General
Corporation company (NYSE:DGN), announced today that it will be
teaming up with Europe-based technology leader Bull and Emulex
Corporation (NASDAQ:EMLX) to demonstrate the first fibre channel based
disaster recovery solution for open AIX environments. The
demonstration will take place at Les Clayes-sous-Bois at the same time
as the Oracle OpenWorld/Oracle Expo taking place in Paris, France
December 10th and 11th.

The demonstration illustrates a high-performance disaster
recovery solution for mission- critical enterprise applications. It
will include two Bull Escala servers running an Oracle database,
connected via Emulex LightPulse PCI host adaptors, to both a local and
remote CLARiiON FC3000 fibre channel RAID-protected storage subsystem
(marketed by Bull as the "DAS 3500").

"We have already validated full customer fibre channel
configurations in our laboratories, utilizing 10-kilometer remote
connections between Escala AIX-based servers and CLARiiON fibre
channel storage subsystems with Emulex PCI host adapters," said Pierre
de Meyer director of R&D for Bull in Grenoble, France. "The
improvements in performance and distance connectivity of fibre channel
over SCSI-based connections is significant."

"We are delighted that Bull has selected the Emulex LightPulse
PCI host adapter for their Escala SMP systems," said Mike Kane,
director of marketing for Emulex. "We expect the introduction of high
performance, high availability systems like the Bull Escala SMP
servers and the CLARiiON DAS 3500 RAID subsystems to accelerate the
demand for fibre channel products over the next several quarters."

"CLARiiON has worked very closely with Bull and Emulex to deliver
fibre channel products that provide scalability, interoperability, and
very high performance for today's business- critical applications,"
said Larry Hemmerich, vice president and general manager of CLARiiON.
"The availability of fibre channel-based solutions, like the Bull
Escala SMP server and Emulex LightPulse PCI host adaptor, validates
fibre channel's current market positioning as a high speed
controller-to-disk interconnect for centralized and remote enterprise
applications."

Added Hemmerich, "This announcement is a big step for the storage
industry in supporting the transition to fibre channel architecture.
The use of these new products will allow users maximum flexibility for
disaster recovery configuration design and management in open AIX
environments."

For immediate delivery, Bull's large SMP database server, Escala
RL, incorporates Emulex's LightPulse PCI host adapters which are used
as highly-available fibre channel connections to the next-generation
DAS3500 CLARiiON RAID disk subsystems. This enables terabyte-scale
disaster recovery solutions to be implemented at distances of up to 10
kilometers, with transfer rates performance levels of up to 100
MB/sec.

The Emulex LightPulse fibre channel PCI host adapter is a
high-performance I/O solution for applications like client/server,
database I/O, multimedia and imaging which require a new level of high
throughput coupled with low latency characteristics. It is designed
using 3 custom VLSI chips. These highly integrated chips provide a
simple, high level command block interface to fibre channel protocols
using a built-in protocol engine with an integrated RISC processor.
This reduces host requirements, while simplifying the driver
interface.

The fibre-channel attached SCSI Series 3000 disk array delivers
an enterprise level solution with connections to the top open system
platforms, terabyte capacities, extensive management tools, and
high-availability software extensions, in a product with proven data
integrity and availability features. Furthermore, it features the most
robust and field-proven RAID software available. Its patented data
integrity solutions have been proven over a five-year span in more
than 60,000 systems sold by major server manufacturers and storage
resellers around the globe.
