Halting after hours trading pending news is fairly standard. It protects us little guys from unfair trading by the institutions. You will also probably see a big spread between bid and ask after hours if you look.

A word of caution to anyone planning to make a trade tomorrow morning: The first 30-45 minutes of trading the next day is often very volatile. Be careful if you plan to place a buy or sell tomorrow morning.

Jon: It is not standard unless the company requests to stop trading for some time. Many companies do request trading halts even when there is good news.
