It is a balance every democratic organization has to juggle.
So let's juggle it a little bit. You believe that education is so critical to society that the state monopoly needs to be protected from competition, but it is OK because it is run by a democratically elected school board.

Lets apply that logic to another critical need of society, housing. We can't let the masses struggle in inferior accommodations. Society, through democratically elected housing boards should provide public housing for all. Of course the rich would have other options, but most people would be subject to the wise decisions of the local housing board. Of course in this world, since housing is so critical, we can't have greedy RE agents profiteering on the backs of society's less fortunate, and they will have no role, since the housing board would wisely allocate all housing. Doesn't that sound like a grand vision of society?
