The 5C does nothing but steal from the 4 and 5S market. It simply does not attract any new customers. The market reaction is unsurprising, given the case.

I agree, pretty much business as usual for Apple. I assume that iPhone sales in aggregate will grow in the new generation, although how much of that is due to the 5C, we will never really know. If nothing else, the 5C almost certainly has a better cost structure than the outgoing 5 did, so it's better suited for the mid-tier $100 price point.
