Same with a Xerox printer commercial... Has an old SE/30 startup chime at the very beginning. No Macs in sight; just a bunch of Wintel laptops scurrying around a table.

Misc. Responses.

1) Sales At My Store - We don't keep Q to Q tracking numbers but it sure *feels* busy.

It's tough to give accurate numbers because we do a lot of factory reconditioned, used, consignment items. (Also, about half our revenues is in repairs.) We figure it's going to be madness between now and mid-January.

2) Working at CompUSA. I visited the Manhattan store and was favorably impressed by the display -- lots of banners and all the cool new toys -- even a G3 laptop and an eMate300. All were up and running with nice demo software. Unfortunately the lone Mac salesperson was on lunch break. A PC person did tell me that they *were* looking for Mac salespeople.

I even got an application form. I complimented the floor manager on the Mac section and asked how much he would *charge* me to work there. (He didn't seem to get the joke though.) He said he would talk compensation only after reading my application. He also told me that CompUSA was pretty restricted to new, currently shipping items.

Bottom Line, I live half a block from my current store, would make more money there and wouldn't have to wear those tacky red shirts. (I just wouldn't have all those cool toys to play with.) Ah well.

3) Cheap Macs. Hmm. My first thought is e-mail me. Otherwise, look at a 4400 @ $1200 or Umax C-500 at $1000. Add 32MB ram at $150. A 56K modem at $175 or 28.8 modems at $100. A Mac, Sony or generic SVGA monitor at $250-350. Epson 600's are incredible at $275 or basic reconditioned Stylewriters 1200 for about $100-150.

If you're parents are novices, shop local (to them) and get a store that can do *some* hand holding otherwise *you're* going to be their tech support.

Also, check the bargain items in the Apple Store! A refurbished Performa 6300/100/16/1gig/4xcd/28.8 for $700 and a 14" Monitor for $300 is likely all they'll ever need.
