A friend of mine (who is a PhD scientist) has been interviewing for a position in Agouron a couple of years ago. Mr. Johnson was one of his interviewers. My friend's impression was actually pretty close to the description in the title. During the interview, they talked a lot about golf and Mr. Johnson told my friend that he had been in real estate business prior to founding Agouron. So I do not know where this <<brilliant researcher>> business came from.

IMHO, a brilliant researcher running a company is a major negative from the investment point of view. Any biotech company is a business and should be run not by brilliant scientists but by brilliant businessmen. The scientists should stay in academia or big pharma.
