Thean:

Given your three scenarios, the only one that makes sense (for you) to sell is #2 -- a decline. Given that we are in the run-up to earnings announcements, and the industry still looks very strong here, what's the likelihood of a sideways drift? Particularly after the corection.

FWIW, several (BIGJET et al) on the AOL thread hypothesize a "quarterly effect" in which prices move strongly up in the month (i.e., starting around Dec 10 or so) prior to announcements. It seems to have occurred over the last 8 quarters.

IMHO,

drsvelte

Trade for maximum profits. There will always be taxes.

If you make much from your investments, you should be filing
quarterly 1040ES (estimated tax) forms, along with your estimated
tax payment. If you sell January 2, you should report it on 1st quarter '98 , due April 15, same as this year's return.
Penalty and intrest add up if you don't. I know.

Theon,

You can sell jan in the money call if you want to protect some profit and jan will delay your tax bill further out.

Thean, i'm not very good at timing and have very little knowledge about taxes, but from what i have read: Institutions are buying now because the market has done well again this year and they do not want to be seen as having too much in cash. It is expected that the market will tread upwards to new highs before he end of the year. January is almost always an up month because of IRAs and new investments. IMHO, if you haven't sold yet it is too late to sell, subtract of taxes and buy back.

BTW, i follow your post because your TA has proved to be pretty good, am i wrong that you sold a few weeks ago and were still waiting for "long white candle sticks"?
