Pravin,

The report simply affirm that the information appliance market could reach 800 million sets in five years.

Everyone is get excited about this possibility. National-Semi and M$FT are best positioned for this huge market. However, you could not expect NSM to dominate the information appliance market like the way that Intel has dominated the x86 market during the past decade. With its 2nd-class technology, Intel is going to be the biggest lose of this technology revolution.

Pravin,

RE:What if Microsoft decides to port Windows to the SH-4 and its decendents?

NT would be the only fat OS they could port, Win98-99 is too x86 specific. This would be a non-trivial task however(NT 5.0 is like 22+ million lines of code) and it doesn't make much sense considering they went to the trouble of developing CE for that market. CE is the best bet for set-tops. Hey, hold on, didn't I just read an article that Intel would dominate set-top boxes? :-)

Whatever, NSM will do fine with Windows 99 and NT 5.0 full-featured systems and may get some to a lot of the XC market with NSM's other core.

IMHO,

Bob

BTW, There is an excellent book called "Showstopper" that details the development of NT. Good stuff.

Pravin Re " I wonder when we'll see the day when Microsoft gets a crack in their monopoly"

There is a strong alternative "brewing" in Java. The low end is going
to have a lot of useful little gadgets - the one I'm looking at getting
is a phone, with built-in email and internet access - The device has
already been shown in shows, local service is not yet available where
I live.

With the Internet becoming the primary desktop of most people in
the near future - Msft is going to get some real competition for the
first time

IMHO
