SAS hero of the mall massacre: Off duty soldier with a handgun saved 100 lives as terrorists ran amok
  • Was having coffee at Westgate mall when it was attacked on Saturday
  • Returned to building a dozen times, despite intense gunfire
  • Sources said the soldier was with the Special Air Service, or SAS
  • Man, who can't be named for security reasons, was pictured with victims
By Paul Bentley and David Williams

23 September 2013

An off-duty member of the SAS emerged as a hero of the Nairobi siege yesterday, after he was credited with saving up to 100 lives.

The soldier was having coffee at the Westgate mall when it was attacked by Islamists on Saturday.

With a gun tucked into his waistband, he was pictured helping two women from the complex.

Our saviour: The soldier, whose gun is circled, helps two women to safety. His identity has been protected for security reasons

He is said to have returned to the building on a dozen occasions, despite intense gunfire.

A friend in Nairobi said: ‘What he did was so heroic. He was having coffee with friends when it happened.

‘He went back in 12 times and saved 100 people. Imagine going back in when you knew what was going on inside.’

Sources said the soldier was with the Special Air Service, or SAS. He cannot be named for security reasons.

The British Special Forces regularly train and operate out of Kenya, and have been involved in tracking UK citizens involved with hardline Islamists in Somalia and Yemen.

Former members work with both the UK and Kenyan governments and security firms across East Africa.

Late last night it remained unclear how many gunmen and hostages remained inside, hours after a series of loud explosions and gunfire reverberated through part of the complex, and plumes of black smoke began billowing from the roof.

Ominous: A picture purportedly showing gunmen entering the mall

People run for cover after hearing gunshots near the Westgate shopping mall, as the three-day siege drew to an end

One report said it had been caused by terrorists setting mattresses alight in a supermarket to create a distraction, but security officials said the explosions heard at lunchtime were Kenyan forces blasting their way in.

‘They can hide but they can’t run... all ways out are sealed,’ one official said.

The massacre began on Saturday shortly before midday local time.

Witnesses told how terrorists with faces hidden by Islamic scarves stormed the building, tossing grenades and spraying shoppers with AK-47s.

Yesterday pictures emerged online that appeared to show the moment gunmen entered the shopping centre, pointing their weapons at terrified civilians.

The killers, who were dressed in Western clothes, ordered all Muslims to leave, before carrying out rudimentary tests to see if hostages could recite the Koran and name the mother of the Prophet Mohammed.

One security officer said the mall had been turned into ‘an abattoir’ within half an hour, as gunmen went on the rampage.

Militants have reportedly burned their victims’ faces and removed their hands in an attempt to conceal their identities; the bodies were piled against the main door to slow the progress of rescue teams.

Yesterday reports emerged online that an injured woman trapped inside had been sexually abused at gunpoint in front of young hostages.

Smoke rises from the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi following a string of explosions during the third day of a stand-off between Kenyan security forces and gunmen inside the building

It is believed that she has been shot in the shoulder, while her child has been killed.

Details of the incident were posted hundreds of times on Facebook.

The woman is said to have been able to speak several times with her husband, who is outside the shopping centre – but last night he had heard nothing from her for several hours.

Another witness, Kamille Kaur, was with several dozen children for a cookery competition on the mall’s second floor when the attack began.

Her son, 12, and daughter, 8, were injured as gunmen opened fire. She said adults ‘were like animals, climbing over the children to get out’.

A Twitter account representing Al Shabaab, the group claiming responsibility for the attack, said it was carried out by terrorists from seven nations, including Britain, the US and Canada.

The group has recently split into two factions following bloody infighting.
Those not involved in the Nairobi attack are said to be spreading false information, raising questions over the veracity of initial reports that Londoners Ahmed Nasir Shirdoon, 24, and Liban Adam, 23, are among the gunmen.

Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Julius Karangi, said fighters from several countries had participated in the attack, but would not specify which ones.

‘We have an idea who they are, their nationality and even the number,’ he said, adding that the militants were ‘clearly a multinational collection from all over the world’.

Sporadic gun shots could be heard hours after the assault started as soldiers surrounded the mall and police and soldiers combed the building

People help a wounded man outside the Westgate shopping mall, as 69 people were slaughtered by the terrorists

‘We have also have an idea that this is not a local event,’ he said. ‘We are fighting global terrorism here and we have sufficient [intelligence] to suggest that.’

At least three of the terrorists were killed, he added, after Kenyan forces moved into the five-storey complex, which was filled with some 1,200 people when it was stormed by three heavily armed groups on Saturday.

Kenyans were last night bracing themselves for further terror attacks after it was claimed dozens more militants from the organisation had bribed their way into the country.

A spokesman for Al Shabaab said all Britons in Kenya are ‘legitimate’ targets because the UK has supported the African country’s military intervention in neighbouring Somalia.

Yesterday David Cameron returned early from Balmoral, where he had been staying with the Queen, to chair an emergency Cobra meeting with Cabinet colleagues including Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Chancellor George Osborne and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.

U of Md official tells students Trayvon Martin case proved it's 'legal to hunt' children
.......................................................................
By Maxim Lott September 25, 2013
foxnews.com

An email sent to students by a University of Maryland official that cites the Trayvon Martin shooting as evidence "it is legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida" is being blasted as the latest evidence of a left-wing bias on campus.

The email, from William Dorland, director of the school's Honors College, starts by welcoming students back to campus, but then quickly veers into politics.

"This year, we learned that it is legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida," it reads,in a reference to the trial of George Zimmerman, who was cleared of all charges in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The email went out to all students in the Honors College.

"This year, we learned that it is legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida."
- E-mail sent to University of Maryland students

The political language continued:

"This year, the most activist Supreme Court in the history of the United States and radical factions of gun owners, gun manufacturers, and marijuana users are challenging the very fabric of the nation..."

Dorland then invites students to attend a lecture by former NAACP chairman Julian Bond.

The email comes on the heels of a host of allegations of bias on college campuses around the country this fall -- from a case at UNC Chapel Hill in which funding was cut for two conservative speakers to appear on campus, to an incident at the University of Kansas, where a professor said he hoped the next shooting victims would be children of NRA members.

In the Maryland case, Jim Purtilo, a University of Maryland computer science professor, said the comments struck him as inappropriate.

"It's over the top. But very much business as usual on this campus," he said.

Dorland, reached by phone, told FoxNews.com that his goal was merely to stir student interest in the Julian Bond speaking event.

"I didn't regard it as a political statement, I regarded it as trying to stir some student interest in an activity going on on campus," Dorland told FoxNews.com.

He said that he did receive complaints.

"There were three students and a faculty member who asked me not to use such violent or inappropriate language in the future, and I apologized to them because I didn't want to offend anybody. But I did want to stir things up," he said.

But Purtilo said that he complained to Dorland by email and that Dorland never apologized to him. Instead, said Purtilo, Dorland responded by defending the accuracy of his line about the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Some students reached by FoxNews.com were supportive of Dorland.

"[Dorland] is a great academic and has done great things for our university," said Ben Kramer, president of the College Democrats at the University of Maryland.

"While I do not agree with his choice of words [in the Trayvon Martin reference], I respect and agree with his efforts to foster a dialogue about contentious issues."

Others took more offense.

"Sending politically charged emails like this not only alienates students, but also adds to our toxic political discourse," Ross Marchand, president of the campus Students for Liberty, said.

Caroline Carlson, chairwoman of the UMD College Republicans, agreed.

"Claiming that it is 'legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida' is stretching the truth, and frankly, we believe Professor Dorland should be above making those types of false statements in what is presumed to be a factual Honors College email."

Dorland defended his use of that line.

"I think it's stirring the pot," Dorland said about his email. "I think, factually, the sentence -- it may be strained and polemic or something -- but it is roughly at least what many people would say was the outcome of the verdict [of the Trayvon Martin case]. I'm not going to avow or disavow the position because it doesn't really matter what I think."

Purtilo, however, says that the incident is indicative of liberal bias he sees on the campus every day. He related one story that he had seen.

"I was on a committee for a very prestigious award on campus, which basically gives a free ride to the selected student, and I remember our committee once interviewing a young woman from one of the more rural counties of the state. And she was poised and articulate and tremendously well prepared, top scores and maxed out SAT and everything... but she made no secret about her religious views, and she asked about things like whether we had a drug- and alcohol-free dorm hall," Purtilo said.

"The committee's conclusion was, 'oh, she has very strict views, very rigid views -- she would not be comfortable here'... you often hear code words like those, which really mean that the person is right-of-center politically."

Dorland dismissed the idea that his emailed quote was indicative of general political bias on campus.

"I don't really want to suggest to you that I'm backing down, but I will tell you that we've had speakers here from AEI, from the CATO Institute -- and [Arizona Sen. John] McCain was invited to be here."

"In my job here I'm pretty apolitical," he added. "You can ask the students. I will take the side of Pope Benedict on an argument, and the next day take the side of a new Pope. You know, the intellectual position in the world is to engage people and get them to talk about what they believe in," he said.

ObamaCare's Mandate To Shut Down Little Sisters Of The Poor
......................................................................................................
09/27/2013
news.investors.com

A group of nuns dedicated to caring for the elderly poor is suing to prevent an uncaring administration from shutting down their compassionate order over their refusal to obey the contraception mandate.

There is no clearer or sadder example of the Obama administration's war on the First Amendment's guarantee of religious liberty than the demand by the Department of Health and Human Services to violate their religious consciences or pay heavy fines.

HHS has ruled that if the Sisters don't offer insurance policies to their employees that include free coverage for sterilization procedures, artificial contraceptives and abortifacients, these vowed-to-poverty women will have to pay about $1 million in IRS fines, effectively making their work nearly impossible.

The Little Sisters of the Poor are a global Roman Catholic congregation of women, founded in 1839 by St. Jeanne Jugan. They operate homes in 31 countries, where they provide loving care for more than 13,000 needy elderly persons. Thirty homes are in the U.S.

Last Tuesday, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Little Sisters of the Poor. It questions the HHS ruling that, while houses of worship are exempt from the contraception mandate, the Little Sisters of the Poor are merely a social service organization that serves and hires non-Catholics, so it does not qualify for an exemption.

"The Little Sisters are driven by their religious faith to do what they do in terms of taking care of the elderly poor," said Mark Rienzi, senior counsel for the Becket Fund. "The government should not be telling them they have to violate that faith to keep serving the poor."

That objection has been raised by the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, which argues that that religious institutions aren't merely defined by church buildings open on Sunday but by the work they do and that the government needs to ensure the First Amendment isn't gutted.

"We are not exempt from the (ObamaCare) mandate because we neither serve nor employ a predominantly Catholic population," Sister Constance Carolyn Veit, the Little Sisters' communications director, told the Daily Caller. "We hire employees and serve/house the elderly regardless of race and religion, so that makes us ineligible for the exemption being granted churches."

"Like all of the Little Sisters, I have vowed to God and the Roman Catholic Church that I will treat all life as valuable, and I have dedicated my life to that work," said Sister Loraine Marie, superior for one of the three U.S. provinces in the congregation. "We cannot violate our vows by participating in the government's program to provide access to abortion-inducing drugs."

So the Department of Health and Human Services wants to shut down a group of nuns who provide health and human services to the elderly poor.

Worse yet, the government seems to be violating the liberals' beloved separation of church and state by defining what a church is and what it is not.

This is not an unintended consequence of ObamaCare. The destruction of non-government social service networks is necessary to complete our "fundamental transformation" from liberty to socialism.

In President Obama's transformed America there can be no credible noncoercive alternatives to government care for the poor.

"Freedom of worship was guaranteed in the constitution of the former Soviet Union," Cardinal George wrote in a column in the Catholic New World. "You could go to church, if you could find one. The church, however, could do nothing except conduct religious rites in places of worship — no schools, religious publications, health care institutions, organized charity, ministry for justice and works of mercy that flow naturally from a living faith. We fought a long Cold War to defeat that vision of society."

Or so we thought.

Radical black supremacist, Chokwe Lumumba is Jackson, Mississippi mayor

..........................................................................................................................................

The people of Jackson, Mississippi, apparently aiming to become a junior Detroit of the South, have chosen as their mayor a radical black supremacist Democrat, Chokwe Lumumba. The 66-year-old Lumumba was born Edwin Taliaferro in Detroit but later changed his name.

Here in Mississippi, we have a conservative majority among residents; however, the population of Jackson is roughly 80 percent black and 20 percent white, and we know that a stupefying majority of black people blindly support Democrats, regardless of the Democrats' evil, destructive policies.

Of his election, WorldNetDaily's (WND) Scott Greer wrote:

Voters in Jackson, Miss., a mid-sized city in the heart of the Deep South, have picked a Democrat as their mayor. What's different about this individual is that he is a former leader of the Republic of New Afrika, a group dedicated to creating an independent black nation out of five southern states.

Now leading the city of about 175,000 is Chokwe Lumumba – who has a long history of radical activism and whose plans for the largest city in Mississippi could be called "revolutionary."

A co-founder of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, which promotes black "self-determination," Lumumba was sworn in on July 1, after winning 86 percent of the vote in the general election.

This guy is part of a racist movement that intends to commandeer five southeastern states and turn them into an independent nation, a little Africa – excuse me – a little Afrika. Do the residents of Jackson think this is okay?

With all the people to this day criticizing and deriding the secessionist South of the Civil War, I find it rather silly that the Democrats in Jackson apparently don't see the irony of this man's revolutionary goal of an independent "black nation" in the South, which, last time I checked, would mean seceding from the United States of America.

But, wait! There's more! Lumumba, a lawyer, has the praise of Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam satellite publication The Final Call, which carried a glowing piece on Lumumba. WND's Scott Greer cites the column:

During his career as an attorney, Final Call reported, he represented members of the Black Liberation Army, and he was vice president of the "Republic of New Afrika," which claimed Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina to be the home of a new "black nation."

His plans include summer youth programs such as what he calls "African Scouts."

Blogger Trevor Loudon, of the New Zeal, "Shining the Torch for Liberty," said anyone who doubts Lumumba's dedication to being a Marxist revolutionary should watch him in action in 1998 in Washington.

There he demanded freedom for black "political prisoners" in the U.S.

He cited convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal as one of those needing "liberation," Loudon reports.

Lumumba also listed another convicted cop murderer, Assata Shakur, of the Black Liberation Army, and Loudon noted that Lumumba was Shakur's lawyer.

"We're here in the governmental center of the citadel of imperialism," Lumumba said about Washington, where the buildings were built "off the blood of our people" and using the "wealth they have stolen not only from colonies all over the world, but the African colony."

"This is a corrupt system," he shouted. "There can be no bargain with this system ... there can be no compromise. ... We are New Africans. We come here because we are colonized."

Lumumba also claims he is not a racist. This would make me laugh, except I'm too busy being sick to my stomach that 86 percent of the people of Jackson are stupid enough to have elected this radical, whom they had already elected to their city council before they made him mayor. A guy who says he wants to import large numbers of black people into Mississippi, so he can create a permanent, black Democrat voting majority in order to usher in a new, black separatist nation within the United States and who gave a raised, clenched-fist "black power" salute at his swearing-in, says he's not racist? Go on and pull my other leg, mister.

Chokwe Lumumba's "reign" as mayor has only just begun. No doubt he will be watched very closely by people all over the country, and even beyond, as he undertakes what looks to be a fundamental transformation of Jackson, Mississippi. Hmmmm... Where have I heard something like that before?

Priests threatened with arrest if they minister to military during shutdown
.................................................................
10/04/2013 by Alex Pappas
dailycaller.com

In a stunning development, some military priests are facing arrest if they celebrate mass or practice their faith on military bases during the federal government shutdown.

“With the government shutdown, many [government service] and contract priests who minister to Catholics on military bases worldwide are not permitted to work – not even to volunteer,” wrote John Schlageter, the general counsel for the Archdiocese for the Military Services USA, in an op-ed this week. “During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so.”

According to its website, the Archdiocese for the Military Services “provides the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the United States Armed Forces.”

In his piece, Schlageter worries about this restriction as Sunday nears. “If the government shutdown continues through the weekend, there will be no Catholic priest to celebrate Mass this Sunday in the chapels at some U.S. military installations where non-active-duty priests serve as government contractors,” he wrote.

Because of the lack of active-duty Catholic chaplains, the military relies on hiring civilian priests to serve as government service and contract ministers. Those civilian priests are not allowed on the bases during a shutdown, Schlageter wrote.

One Republican lawmaker on the House Intelligence Committee told The Daily Caller on Friday that this “crosses a constitutional line.”

“The constitutional rights of those who put their lives on the line for this nation do not end with a government slowdown,” Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo, a graduate of West Point and an Army veteran, said in a Friday statement. ”It is completely irresponsible for the president to turn his back on every American’s First Amendment rights by furloughing military contract clergy.”

Added Pompeo: “The President’s strategy during the slowdown, just as during the sequestration, is to create as much pain as possible. However, this action crosses a constitutional line of obstructing every U.S. service member’s ability to practice his or her religion.”
