Samuel Adams was a maltster, producing malt used in making beer. It was a family business. After he entered politics, he was elected to the position of tax collector by a Boston town meeting and served for 3 years. He "failed" at it as he let people get away without paying their taxes, so the Boston town meeting sued him personally for uncollected taxes. Let's not pretend he was an abusive Lois Lerner.

And there's no reason to think Thomas Paine was to Z's left. Paine believed in a guaranteed minimum income and so does Z. Paine was against Christianity and so is Z.
