"nor am impressed with the trappings and rituals of religion." That's good but don't throw out the baby with the bath water. The substance of Christianity is Christ. "God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ" where through Christ God has chosen not to count our trespasses (sins) against us so that our reconciliation to God was made easy through faith and repentance. It's simply a matter of finding the true power to fix your brokenness brought about by sin. All men and sinned and come short of the glory of God. Forget about false religions and rituals that can never make you perfect. Instead focus on the promises that God has given through Christ. If you sincerely seek God, you will find Him, if you seek Him with all your heart. In this age of science and skepticism maybe you can think of testing a hypothesis. God said in his word : "if you seek him, you will find him, if you seek him with all your heart." A simple challenge to the modern cynical mind. The balls in your court.
