The benefit of KOA's is they are a national franchise and impose standards on their franchisees. You can generally count on KOA's to be clean and have decent amenities. Not true at some other campgrounds. When you're not familiar with a particular campground, it's difficult to decide in advance whether you will like it or not. Going with the KOA brand gives some assurance that certain standards will be met.

As for why it is Kampgrounds of America instead of Campgrounds of America, I suspect someone thought it would be cutsey to have it spelled that way.
