"Money Digest Cash registers jingling with holiday spending U.S. consumer spending rose 12 percent during the first nine days of the holiday shopping season, Visa USA said. Consumers spent more than $10.3 billion -- or an average $1.1 billion a day -- in more than 156 million Visa card transactions since the shopping season started more than a week ago. Sales increases were led by mail and telephone orders, which rose 15 percent from the same period a year ago, to $1.7 billion. "
