Novell? Not long ago I would have despaired at they being the possible acquirer of Applix (as surely there will be before long - treading water is pointless for APLX, us investors, customers, et al) - but, I recall reading a piece in The Red Herring some while ago on the new CEO at Novell (Erik Schmidt? Something like that) who left a very senior role at Sun to head up Novell. Brave man?

A fool or inspired? Came across as more inspired in article; astute bunny (as a Sun pedigree would provide) - this guy will not perpetuate the Wordperfect/Unix debacles that rightly ashamed Novell in recent years. This new guy is a technology businessman more akin to Gates, which is good news for Novell, at long last.

Novell are more of a technology company than we often think and their alliances with Netscape show they are biting the bullet to reinforce their (still) very dominant market-share - NT has hit more low-end Unix than Novell which has surprised many people, not least of which Novell - APLX as an acquisition would fit in well with their Netscape/Intranetware strategy - and the Unix technical credibility/experience they would get with APLX acquisition wouldn't go amiss. Novell people are terribly proprietary in technology skills, of course - getting some TCP/IP folk would beef up their IPX skill-sets only story.

Fingers crossed it will happen, soon. Tread water for too long and you tire and drown (enough of the metaphors - back to the - oh, too early for Chablis - black coffee it is then. NOT Java, I hasten to add!) ...
