Cahners Research Study Reveals 3Com Corporation's Leadership Position in the State and Local
Government Market

BusinessWire, Wednesday, December 03, 1997 at 10:22

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1997--

Awareness and Position Study Names 3Com as the Networking Brand
Most Often Considered and Purchased

A Cahners Research study sponsored by Government Computer News
(GCN) found 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) to be the premier
networking provider to the state and local government market.
The research study was undertaken to learn about reader behavior
and perceptions in relation to networking products and 3Com's
position in the state and local government market. Respondents
reported that they were most familiar with and loyal to 3Com
networking products and named 3Com as the first choice when
considering networking vendors.
Seventy-eight percent of all respondents currently have 3Com
equipment installed at their company and, overall, respondents
indicated they are most loyal to 3Com. Seventy percent of
respondents said 3Com was the brand considered most often and nearly
50% said 3Com was the brand purchased most often when they were
making their latest networking procurement decision. Reputation
(58%) and price (57%) were the answers most often given as reasons
for purchasing recent networking products.
Nine in ten respondents reported that they were moderately or
very familiar with 3Com and of those, 77% have a positive impression
of the company and none reported a negative impression. More than
three-fourths of respondents said they recommend networking products,
and routers, network interface cards (NICs) and stackable hubs are
the most common types of networking products currently installed.
Questionnaires were mailed to 2,000 GCN State and Local and 1,000
GCN subscribers. The survey targeted those involved in the purchase
process for communication and networking products and services with
titles such as administration/operations manager, computer
systems/communications manager and technical/engineering manager.
Completed surveys totaled 414 for a response rate of 13.8%.
"The results of the survey prove that 3Com is establishing a
leadership role in this important market," said Tobias Yergin, 3Com's
state and local government industry manager. "Our commitment
to providing superior products and customer service will continue to
make 3Com the networking vendor of choice in state and local
government."

<< But don't you think companies like COMS,ASND,SEG,etc. have been pun-
shed enough? If I were required to either short or go long on COMS or ASND, I would go
long, (as I am now). >>

The street punishes companies hard because usually they don't disappoint only once. BAY took 2 years to get their act together. After practically never missing a quarter CS missed the last 3 in a row. Companies like C$CO or DELL or MSFT seem to always have their act together. That's why they deserve a premium.

If I decide to cover here soon it won't be because I think COMS is a good buy. It will be because COMS is in such trouble that management might feel the need to sell out. (And I'm sure they will convince someone to pay a nice price).
