Just brainstorming here and hurting myself, but here's another thought. Say Texaco thinks that Syntroleum has a great idea and possibly a working one for converting gas to liquid. So, they put a lot of money into an expensive company. Well, to hedge their bets on an unproven technology, they also invest or "buy" another company with a different and potentially better way to convert gas to liquid. Putting a few bucks into a small company like RNTK would be a drop in the bucket compared to what they might have invested in Syntroleum. RNTK provides a very cheap insurance and a great way to diversify their investments for the long run.

By investing in RNTK, they've got the bases covered and makes them the leader in the "emerging" field of creating fuel by converting gas to liquid.
