Yes. Twenty five years ago when the Pentagon was still deploying the satellites, many marketing guys were suggesting that GPS would become the sixth utility. The idea being that the availability of GPS would be taken for granted like electricity or water or gas, etc.

Qualcomm allowed GPS to work indoors to a degree, but it still isn't as accurate as outdoors. GPS is being augmented with sensors to allow some dead reckoning, and with WiFi to improve indoor accuracy. A new goal for positioning is one meter accuracy everywhere and at all times. I hope it doesn't take another 25 years to get there.<g>

I watched Qualcomm develop GPS in cell phones for a time, but now GPS is just another module like BlueTooth or WiFi. I am watching the company, InvenSense, to see if they can become a bigger player in the indoor positioning arena.
