stu, it is a dangerous game we are playing, betting against the institutions. think about it. they have dumped the stock, and we are buying it up, waiting to sell it back to them at a steeper price. this is no iomega or sbux, where you're playing against joe sixpack and his $2,000 nest egg. we have chosen to take on the big boys. temporary losses should only be expected. but the markets are rigged in their favor, and by buying something that they will soon be buying, we are leapfrogging joe sixpack and his iomega or sbux or whatever else. assuming that they will soon be buying it. how soon? who knows. it is like waiting for godot sometimes. ("nothing to be done.")

my strategy in times when good stocks dip down to ridiculous levels is to sell all my margined stock and, on the same day -- preferably a down day -- use cash (not margin, as per common sense and sec rules) to buy some in-the-money january 2000 leaps at some ridiculously low price. this usually means less money on the table, but a steeper payoff curve (some like that, many hate it), and a slight premium (implied interest for the money you're not putting on the table). if you do things right though, and buy the calls on some really negative sentiment, you can pay much less premium than black-scholes would dictate. the basic fact upon which investing is predicated is that human beings are risk-averse with respect to potential gains; that is why the markets are not a zero-sum game. if you can stick it out long-term, you will be a winner.

>Ah! If only I had more kidneys!

knowing what i know of ithaca, any body parts you are selling will be frozen this time of year.

just some ramblings on this stock... note the low volume on this thread, too. definitely an institutional stock. when i see anyone posting "GO ALTERA! GO ALTERA!" on here, will sell all my leaps and find some stock even more obscure. :-)

best of luck to you... btw, check out amat for another screaming buy.
