There are African-Americans, Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, Mexican-Americans, all of whom appeal to their ancestry in defining themselves. Not wanting to be left out of the hyphenated-American craze, I choose to define myself by my own ancestry. I find "Confederate-American" humorous.

As far as slavery, I find the insinuation that I support it to be simple hate-mongering, and therefore not worthy of a response. There is nothing to be gained in responding to race-baiting. My appreciation of my southern heritage doesn't require me to support slavery anymore than my admiration for Washington and Jefferson require me to approve of their slave-owning. You have it correct when you admit that you are good at obscuring debate. If I am guilty of arrogant condecension it may be that I'm learning from the master.
