Ascend-TIS Deal Integrates Security, Networking Hardware
By Brian Caulfield

December 8, 1997

Network-hardware maker Ascend Communications last month announced a partnership with security software maker Trusted Information Systems Inc. (TIS) to integrate Ascend Pipeline routers with TIS security software.

The partnership will be the first use of the Ascend Firewall Control Protocol, which allows the integration of software security products with Ascend network hardware. TIS will build a software module for its WebStalker intrusion-detection software that can alert Pipeline routers to any tampering with a local area network. WebStalker will instruct the router to shut down the affected area and alert a system administrator.

In addition, because Ascend's Pipeline router encryption and TIS's firewall software support the same IPSec encryption protocol, the two are interoperable, allowing those using Pipeline products to communicate privately with users of TIS's Gauntlet firewalls.

Integrating hardware so closely with third-party security software is a significant new twist in the networking arena, said Ira Machefsky, a senior analyst at Giga Information Group, Cambridge, Mass. "They are out ahead of most other network vendors," Machefsky said of Ascend's announcement.

Ascend hopes that the added security features will draw new customers and give the company an edge over such competitors as Cisco Systems Inc., 3Com, and Bay Networks, according to Ascend's product manager for network security, Doug LaBorde. "Customers see security as a stumbling block to deploying a lot of networks," he said. TIS said it has shipped a similar module that lets WebStalker interface with Cisco's PIX Firewall, although that product has not yet been formally announced.

Ascend's Pipeline router starts at $795, plus $500 for Ascend's firewall and encryption software. TIS's WebStalker intrusion detection software starts at $2,995. TIS representatives declined to offer a release date for the module integrating WebStalker and Ascend's router firewall software. The company said charges for the product, if any, have yet to be determined.
