Their only motivation in selling would be that they simply aren't in the business of investing in biotechnology companies, and must therefore convert their profit to cash and move on. The possibility I didn't mention is that they might actually decide that Ligand is undervalued (a real no-brainer, IMO) and hang on to LGNDW until Ligand reaches the next tier. This is possible since they don't HAVE to dispose of the warrants for 2 1/2 years. The most pessimistic realistic scenario would have to put Ligand at 30-40 in mid 2000.
